What We Do

Roles/Responsibilities

The adapted physical education (APE) Teacher is responsible for providing a comprehensive physical education program for identified students within the Special Education Services Department who, after assessment, qualify for specialized Adapted Physical Education services.  


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Participate in APE placement decisions based on the educational, sociological, and physiological data presented to Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) / Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings
  2. Adapt and modify physical education skills to facilitate integration/inclusion into the general education classroom for indentified special education students
  3. Work with related services personnel as a collaborative team member when implementing strategies to meet the need of students in adaptive physical education
  4. Serve as a member of the admission, review, and dismissal/individual education plan committee when APE is considered or during annual updates
  5. Maintain confidentiality of student data per APE services
  6. Develop and implement instructional plans to assist students in attaining mainstreaming skills for successful participation in the general physical education classroom
  7. Maintain the confidentiality of student information
  8. Maintain up to date record keeping on student progress by updating IEP objectives
  9. Determine/provide direct or consult service, as determined by assessment, to those who are unable to be integrated without modification into the general physical education classroom
  10. Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Special Education and Supervising Campus Coordinator
  11. Maintain current certification in CPR, First Aid, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention


Expectations

 

Getting Started

  • If you are an SISD employee traveling between campuses during school hours, you will need to maintain the Official School Business Travel Log. Obtain a copy of the SISD mileage chart which lists all buildings in the district and driving distances. Return to Special Services for reimbursement at times designated by the Special Ed. Accounting Coordinator. Do not record mileage from your home to school.
  • Each school has a handbook that should contain detailed campus information. Check with your campus school secretary to obtain one of these.
  • If you are going to be absent, contact the Special Services receptionist at ext. 6265 and the Supervising Coordinator. Leave a message before 7:00 am in the morning.  Also contact your campus to notify them of your absence.  Be certain that all responsibilities are covered (i.e. ARDs, staffings, etc.) and appropriate people are notified if you need to reschedule a meeting. 
  • In the event of an absence, the Absence From Duty form and submit to the Special Services Receptionist via interoffice mail.


Campus Responsibilities

  1.  Maintain a Google calendar of ARD/IEP meetings, staffing, and campus assignments
  2.  Attend and participate in IEP/ARD meetings for identified students receiving APE services
  3. Attend ARD/IEP meetings for students referred for APE services
  4. Maintain needed campus equipment for APE services
  5. Provide APE services to identified students per ARD/IEP meeting
  6. Work closely with assigned campus diagnosticians and staff


District Responsibilities

  1. Requisition and maintain physical education equipment and supplies needed for the students’ Individual education plan per needed APE services
  2. Attend staff development in the areas of physical education and special education
  3. Attend monthly district APE meetings
